Business security is at risk in summer

With less surveillance and more remote access, cyberattacks find their perfect moment.

July and August are months of rest and relaxation for many, but cybercriminals don't take vacations. Digital threats remain latent 24 hours a day, and your systems are constantly at risk. In addition, 70% of companies in Spain lack security protocols for cyber incidents, making them easy targets and susceptible to attack. The consequences can range from significant financial losses to the theft of sensitive data.

More than 9,000 companies in Spain suffered cyberattacks in the summer of 2024 alone

In terms of figures, according to reports from INCIBE (National Cybersecurity Institute), in 2024 more than 97,000 incidents were handled by its cybersecurity response team, of which 32.4% were attacks on companies. It is estimated that approximately 30% of these attacks occurred during the summer months.

For its part, CCN-CERT indicated in its annual report that June to August see peaks in hacktivism, espionage campaigns, and targeted ransomware, demonstrating that summer is a particularly critical period.

But… What do we mean when we talk about attacks?

Cyber attackers take advantage of the absence of staff and managers to impersonate them and launch phishing and spear phishing campaigns, sending emails requesting payment of urgent invoices, travel reservations, hotels, or access to fake platforms. The goal: to trick recipients into revealing confidential and sensitive information or making fraudulent payments.

During the summer, there are fewer technical staff available to detect, stop, or respond quickly to ransomware attacks, which are carried out at night and on weekends when the service is unattended. In some cases, several types of attacks are combined to maximize the impact.

In addition, many employees take advantage of the summer months to telework from second homes and remotely, even while traveling. Many devices can be attacked in unsecure locations, such as an open WiFi network at an airport or hotel, or a previously infected USB charging station that exposes devices to silent but effective attacks.

And at the user and domestic level, how can I protect myself?

Here at Nologin, we have some recommendations for you to apply this summer:

  • Disable automatic connection to open WiFi networks on your devices and avoid connecting to public WiFi networks. Use your mobile network as an access point whenever possible (share data from your mobile). If you must connect to WiFi, we recommend using a VPN before accessing services that handle sensitive data (banking, intranet, etc.).
  • Enable two-factor authentication on both your corporate and personal accounts. Use a reliable password manager and, above all, do not share passwords or sensitive data without encryption. Protect your devices with a PIN, fingerprint, or Face ID.
  • Pay attention to emails you receive and be wary of emails asking for urgent payments, credentials, etc. Check the sender's address and links for fraud. For example, it is easy to confuse an l (lowercase L) with an I (uppercase I) in a URL.
  • Do not charge your devices at public USB ports. Avoid charging stations at airports, cafés, stations, etc. Use your own charger or use an adapter that blocks data transmission and only allows charging.

Despreocúpate:

Disfruta del verano gracias a Nologin
